Catherine Willson‘s article entitled, “A Promise Is a Promise: Watch Your Warranties!” was published in the September 2015 edition of Interface Magazine.

Catherine discusses the importance of the fine print within a warranty – especially when you are drafting one – offering a few topics to be especially mindful of.

A few of her suggestions include:

  • Promise only deliverables – If an installer wants to extend a manufacturer’s warranty to its customer, it should ensure that the manufacturer’s warranty is transferable. Otherwise, be prepared to act as a ‘middleman’ between the manufacturer and the customer.
  • Require proper maintenance and compliance with care instructions – Don’t pay for a customer’s failure to maintain the product.
  • Clarify what is being guaranteed A manufacturer may not guarantee colorfastness or appearance, mechanical damage by others, etc.
